Genesis 1:11-12 says,
11 And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation… each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so. 12 The earth brought forth vegetation… each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
What is gardening all about? Among other things, it is about tending, harvesting, and enjoying that which God says is “good!”
That is what the New Hope Garden club learned and experienced this fall. Is there a better way to learn about God and His creation than actually seeing it in action? In October, the sweet potatoes, planted earlier in the fall, were harvested by our students and were readied for a treat.
Then the fun began! With hairnets and gloves along with some guidance from Ms. Ramsey, science teacher and gardener extraordinaire, and Ms. Willis, kitchen manager and cook extraordinaire, the Garden Club went to work in the kitchen. Without giving away the recipe, two words – butter and brown sugar….
Result? 50 pies for Grandparents Day!
As Christians, we are called to care for God’s world. However, it does not stop there. God also says, “Enjoy!” Planting is fun. Harvesting is rewarding. Cooking is creative. All these things reflect God’s work, character, and image. And, as God enjoys his creation and, specifically, his image-bearers (see Gen 1:27), you and me, so we too can enjoy.
Now back to that piece of sweet potato pie….
